Ways to Compare Medicare Advantage Plans
Check Your Medications
Make a list of all your prescription drugs, including dosages. Every plan has a formulary that determines what drugs are covered and at what cost tier.
Ask About Your Doctors
Provider networks vary by plan. A licensed insurance agent can confirm whether your preferred doctors and specialists are in a plan's network before you enroll. HMO plans require in-network providers, while PPO plans offer more flexibility.
Compare Total Costs
Do not just look at the monthly premium. Factor in deductibles, copays, coinsurance, and the maximum out-of-pocket limit to understand your true annual cost.
Review Additional Benefits
Look past premiums and copays to everything else a plan covers. Once you enter your ZIP code, each plan shows the extra benefits it actually offers where you live, and a licensed insurance agent can walk you through them.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I compare Medicare plans in my area?
Enter your 5-digit ZIP code above to see all available Medicare Advantage and Part D plans in your area. You can compare premiums, star ratings, drug deductibles, and plan types side by side to find the plan that fits your needs.
What is the difference between Medicare Advantage and Original Medicare?
Original Medicare (Parts A and B) is administered by the federal government and covers hospital and medical services. Medicare Advantage (Part C) is offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare. Advantage plans include all Part A and B benefits; what else a plan covers depends on the plan, which you can see for your area by entering your ZIP code.
What do Medicare star ratings mean?
Medicare star ratings range from 1 to 5 stars, with 5 being the highest quality. CMS evaluates plans annually based on member experience, customer service, health plan performance, and drug plan performance. Plans rated 4 stars or higher are generally considered high quality.
What is a Special Needs Plan (SNP)?
Medicare Advantage Special Needs Plans are a type of Medicare Advantage plan designed for people with specific conditions. Medicare Advantage Dual-Eligible Special Needs Plans (D-SNPs) are for people who have both Medicare and Medicaid — you must have both to qualify for a D-SNP. Chronic Condition Special Needs Plans (C-SNPs) serve people with certain chronic conditions. Institutional Special Needs Plans (I-SNPs) are for people in long-term care facilities.
When can I change my Medicare plan?
You may change your Medicare plan during the Annual Enrollment Period (October 15 - December 7). During the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (January 1 - March 31), if you are enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan you have one opportunity to switch to another Medicare Advantage plan or return to Original Medicare. Outside those periods you may be able to enroll only if you are in your Initial Enrollment Period (new to Medicare) or qualify for a Special Enrollment Period, such as moving.
What is a drug deductible on a Medicare plan?
A drug deductible is the amount you pay out of pocket for prescription drugs before your plan begins to cover costs. Not all Medicare plans have a drug deductible. Plans with $0 drug deductibles start covering your medications right away, which can save you money at the pharmacy.
Can I compare Medicare plans without talking to an agent?
Yes, you can use the search tool above to browse available plans in your area. However, a licensed insurance agent may help you evaluate plans based on your specific doctors, medications, and healthcare needs. Meeting with an agent is free, there is no obligation to enroll, and it may save you time.
